How do I become a/an Botanical Artist?

What courses should I take and can you give me a list
of Art Institutes that specialize in Botanical Illustration?
And that have art courses in Entomology and Ornithology,
as well please.Thanks! : )

Undergraduate programs should include studio art classes (watercolor painting, figure drawing, graphic design), art history, and science (including biology, anatomy, chemistry, physiology, histology). If pursuing a graduate degree in science illustration, the undergraduate program should include foreign language studies and your science courses need to be at a pre-med level. Give consideration to whether the university has a “co-op” program, in which you can gain experience (and college credit) while working within the art community. That will help you to develop your resume. Also give consideration, in your selection of studio art classes, to your portfolio and which classes lend themselves to projects to add to your portfolio.

The authors of the bestselling "Botanical Illustration Course with the Eden Project" are back with new sources of inspiration for professionals and amateurs interested in creating scientifically accurate illustrations of flowers and plants. There’s also a captivating exploration of new ideas in the field, including combining botanical art with traditional Japanese flower arranging. Stunning illustrations appear throughout, many shown step-by-step just as they were created, plus practical advice on commercial opportunities for botanical artists.

Botanical Portraits with Colored Pencils

Botanical Portraits with Colored Pencils

$16.99

This lavishly illustrated volume offers practical, step-by-step instruction for creating professional-quality colored pencil illustrations of flowers, fruits, foliage, and other botanical subjects. All aspects of working with colored pencils are covered, including underpainting, layering and burnishing, mixing and building up color, and adding those finishing touches that bring a botanical subject fully to life. A successfully executed work of botanical art is an exacting blend of scientific accuracy and aesthetic beauty. Colored pencils serve as an excellent alternative to the traditional practice of rendering botanical art in watercolors because pencils are far easier to use and control, yet can produce equally outstanding results. The author instructs in the use of both water-soluble and oil-based colored pencils, and presents progressive illustrations that demonstrate the rendering of an artwork from start to completion. In addition, Botanical Portraits with Colored Pencils shows you how to choose materials and offers guidelines for getting to know each flower or plant before starting an illustration. The book features over 200 beautiful and instructive color illustrations. Works by the author as well as other botanical artists show students a wide range of styles. Author — Ann Swan. Hardcover. 256 pages. 9" × 10" (23 cm × 25 cm).

Ten years in the making, this set combines the finest in photography with up-to-date, expert commentary to bridge the gap between gardener-friendly books and scientific texts. Each plant listing includes: Name: genus, species and common names, date of discovery, and range. Description: detailed and concise in the scientific style. Key Recognition Features. Ecology and Geography. Comment: cultivation needs plus notes about unusual hybrids or developments in the genus.
