Two goals in as many minutes
sealed the points for
Kemblawarra in The Quarry
against Kiama in the District
League clash last Saturday.
Kiama totally dominated the
first half hour of the match,
but could not press home its
advantage by converting several
chances. Striker, Billy
Sterjovski, was heavily marked
throughout, but still managed to
have an effort well saved for
Kiama's first attempt on goal
after 10 minutes. James
Mortimer's powerful runs caused
some concern for the Kemblawarra
defence, but many failed at the
final pass or was blocked by a
resolute defence.
But then the tide changed in a
two minute spell, Kemblawarra
scored two "soft" goals in the
33rd and 35th minutes. The
first, a defence error left
keeper, Tony Ristevski, with no
chance and the second was a
half-hearted hit through a
crowded penalty area which
managed to find the target
through a sea of legs with
Restivski unsighted. Kiama tried
in to claw its way back into the
game, but lacked invention
upfront in breaking down a five
man defence.
Just before halftime, Restivski
was left exposed from a quick
break and could only bring down
an onrushing Kemblawarra striker
for a penalty. But the Kiama
custodian redeemed himself with
a terrific save from the spot
kick. In the second half, Kiama
started well once again, but
were not creating enough chances
to worry the vistiors rearguard
but on the break Kemblawarra hit
the woodwork twice in a ten
minute spell while the defence
allowed shots from long range to
go un-challenged.
Mortimer then had a great chance
to score, but his well directed
lob over the onrushing keeper
just dipped over the bar.
Nate Chellew and Mitch Grant
were dominant at the back, while
Mick Gillespie and Andy Lockard
tried hard in midfield to gain
possession, but it was
man-of-the-match Restivski who
was called upon yet again midway
through the half to keep the
deficit to two. New signing,
Kyle Glazier, had a pleasing
debut, put through by Gillespie,
Glazier managed to pull the ball
back from the byeline to find
Mortimer whose shot just missed
the upright.
Coach, Robert Hernandez, was
forced to hand three youth grade
players their senior debuts, due
to the mounting injury list at
The Quarriers; Wes Gedling,
Blake Eickeler and Jordan Inwood,
all played a part in the match.
And it was an Eickelear
inswinging corner which found
the head of Lockard in the final
minutes of the game, to give
Kiama it last chance to score,
but the midfielder's header
shaved the post.
Earlier, the Youth Grade were a
goal down after only 90 seconds
on the clock, but fought back
well to garner a well deserved
2-2 draw and could have easily
pinched the points had its
chances been taken. Going in 1-0
down at half time, Kiama never
gave up the stouch, with
livewire, Keegan Beringer
levelling the scores with a well
taken strike on 50 minutes. The
jubilation was short lived
however, when a dubious foul for
hand ball at the edge of the box
gifted Kemblawarra a second goal
with Kiama keeper, Ben Cahill,
well beaten with a sweetly
struck direct freekick. Kiama
plugged away for the equaliser
with Joel Taddeo twice going
close with a fine header and
then a neat shot which was well
saved. But Kiama's constant
pressure finally paid dividends
when Wes Gedling drilled a low
hard drive through a crowded
area to level the scores in an
entertaining game.
The Reserves also went a goal
down early in its game but come
back from two nil down to draw
2-2. Aaron Brown and a Daniel
Pridman freekick on 68 minutes
was enough to share the spoils.
Scott Schofield gave a fine
display of total commitment in
his defensive role. |
