FROM the kick off, Tommy
Mayes started the ball rolling
and ended the proceedings with a
fine header after just 48
seconds to give Kiama a dream
start against Corrimal Rangers
in its IFA Division One game in
The Quarry last Saturday.
Without the suspended Steve
Dick, it was a reshuffled line
up from Good Friday's win
against Highlands Utd which took
to the field, but the momentum
was apparent with some fluent
passing moves. James Mortimer
continues to impress up front,
and he had a good effort well
saved on 15 minutes as Kiama
continued to dominate. But it
was against the run of play when
Kiama keeper, Tony Ristevski and
defender Alex Cross collided,
sandwiching a Corrimal striker
in the area, giving away a hotly
disputed penalty. From the spot
kick Corrimal equalised, but it
was Kiama which once again took
the game to its visitors
creating chances, with Mayes and
Mortimer both looking dangerous
on the break. Midway through the
half a Corrimal defender could
only man-handle Mortimer in the
area as he headed for goal, with
yet another penalty being award.
Gary Vian made no mistake to
give Kiama a 2-1 lead. Andy
Lockard was linking up well in
the midfield with Vian and
Michael Pitt, and from one such
move Mortimer increased Kiama's
advantage on 40 minutes with a
well taken goal. In the second
half Kiama continued to push
forward, an Alex Cross effort
just skimming the post, while
Aaron Murphy's accurate cross
found the head of Mortimer, the
strikers header flew just over
the bar. On the hour, new
signing, Billy Sterjovski, came
on for the injured Mayes, and
the former NSL player showed his
class with some deft one touch
football and had two efforts
well saved. Chris Reminis then
made way for Neg Stefoski, as
coach Hernandez used his
experience off the bench to hold
up play in the Corrimal half to
run down the clock. Maximum
points from the two games, means
Kiama are level on top of its
District League with Woonona,
which have a better goal
difference.
Earlier in the day, Kiama
youth grade came back twice from
behind to draw 2-2 in a
sometimes volatile game. Josh
Dietrich and Daniel Swinton were
Kiama scorers, while
new-signing, Mark Jones made a
pleasing home debut. T
The Reserves were narrowly
beaten 2-1 in a hard fought
encounter and were unlucky not
to come away with a share of the
spoils. Jarred Cizerle rounded
off a good game with a well
taken goal to level just before
the interval. The Schofield
brothers, Todd and Scott,
marshalled the defence well
while Miguel Guevara and Nick
Sergi worked tirelessly up front
as the reserves continue to
improve with each performance.
Next week Kiama travel to
Helensburgh Thistle, as the
new-look Quarriers continue its
quest as serious title
contenders. Utility, Steve Dick
should return to the side and
former Kiama stalwart Mitch
Grant should also make his
long-awaited appearance, but
Mayes could well be sidelined
with a badly bruised knee. |
